Post Surgical Lymphatic Massages

Manual lymphatic massages are recommended during the recovery phase following liposuction. These massages are a specialized form that will decrease recovery time and improve results by reducing post-surgical swelling and fibrosis in addition to pain reduction. Lymphatic massages are intended to stimulate the natural movement of the lymph to decrease the fluid accumulation that occurs after surgery.

These massages are recommended for anyone who has had any liposuction procedure. You will need to begin your lymphatic massages 24 hours after surgery for optimal results. 

We recommend a total of 10 massages for 10 consecutive days [if possible] followed by 10 additional massages that utilize different therapies based on your specific needs. Any number of massages is better than no massages at all, but please note surgical results will vary with no massages. During your procedure, your surgeon will intentionally leave the entry points used for liposuction open so that fluid can drain out of them. Often, massage therapists will also use these holes to continue to drain fluid out. This is a normal and expected procedure. The holes will close in 1-3 weeks at which point you could accumulate fluid (known as a seroma). If you or your massage therapist think you may have a seroma, call the office to have it drained.

It is common to experience some pain during these massages – if you are not driving, we recommend taking pain medication 30 minutes prior to your appointment to ensure comfort during the procedure.

When selecting a studio for post lymphatic massages it is important to pick a studio that has experience with post-surgical patients and post-surgical techniques.
